- The Illinois Fire Service Institue, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign,
is a statutory State Fire Academy. The Institute's programs include fire
fighting, hazardous materials and terrorism, rescue, investigation and
fire prevention, industry and Emergency Medical Services (EMS). The library
was established in 1990 as an in-house library to support the training
and teaching of the Institute's faculty. The library also served fire departments
from time to time. Beginning in 1997, under a new Vision 2000 for the Future,
the Institute's goal is to find ways to reach every firefighter. The Library's
Outreach Program was initiated and a survey was conducted among all public
and private Illinois fire departments in the summer of 1998. The Library
Outreach Program is expanding the in-house library to a state-wide Fire
Library and Information Center to provide free library and information
services and programs to all firefighters. Assistance is also provided
to other government agencies, research bodies, and to the general public.
Subject strengths are arson investigation, fire fighting, hazardous materials,
rescue, fire education, fire safety, fire services management, emergency
management, emergency medical services, and training.
