This is a simple process of making the library's LINC Pac url the default home page url for the web browser. Once this is done, LINC Pac can be launched simply by opening the web browser.
1. In Internet Explorer, choose Tools>Internet Options>General. In the box for Home Page, enter the url for your library LINC Pac
http://lincpac.lincolntrail.info:8080/ipac20/ipac.jsp?profile=xxx (where xxx = your library's 3-letter code). Save changes and exit.
2. In Netscape Navigator, choose Edit>Preferences>Navigator. Click on the radio button beside Home Page, in Location box, enter the url for your library LINC Pac
http://lincpac.lincolntrail.info:8080/ipac20/ipac.jsp?profile=xxx (where xxx = your library's 3-letter code). Click OK and exit.
3. In Mozilla, choose Edit>Preferences>Navigator. In the box for Home Page, enter
http://lincpac.lincolntrail.info:8080/ipac20/ipac.jsp?profile=xxx (where xxx = your library's 3-letter code). Save OK and exit.
This can be a more involved process, depending on the type of website design and editor you are using. Determine where you want the link to the library's LINC Pac to be on the web site. You can provide either a text link, such as "Library Catalog" or an image link. The link for the library's LINC Pac is
http://lincpac.lincolntrail.info:8080/ipac20/ipac.jsp?profile=xxx (where xxx = your library's 3-letter code)
If you want to include a link to the LTLS LINC Pac account (which is set to allow both a choice of pickup locations and the ability to place holds on items that are on the shelf at your library), you can also include this url
http://lincpac.lincolntrail.info:8080/ipac20/ipac.jsp?profile=ltn
Setting up
FirstSearch to link to your holdings
FirstSearch can be set up to provide a direct link back to your library's LINC Pac, for shelf status of your holdings. This link will perform a "canned" search with exact results for holdings that have an ISBN or ISSN. If no ISBN or ISSN is present in the record, the user will be taken to a title search screen in LINC Pac where they will have to manually input the title.
This requires access to your library's FirstSearch Administrative Module, which is password protected. Contact LTLS if you do not know this password.
1. Connect to http://firstsearch.oclc.org/crs/html/fsadmin/index.html and input your library's authorization number and administrative password.
2. Select the Resource Linking tab, then the Library Web Catalogs subtab.
3. In the box labeled Catalog Search Entry URL, enter
http://lincpac.lincolntrail.info:8080/ipac20/ipac.jsp?profile=ltn/ipac20/ipac.jsp?profile=xxx (where xxx = your library's 3-letter code)
4. In the box labeled ISBN Search Results URL, enter
http://lincpac.lincolntrail.info:8080/ipac20/ipac.jsp?profile=ltn/ipac20/ipac.jsp?profile=xxx&index=ISBN&term= (where xxx = your library's 3-letter
code)
5. In the field labeled ISSN Search Results URL, enter
http://lincpac.lincolntrail.info:8080/ipac20/ipac.jsp?profile=ltn/ipac20/ipac.jsp?profile=xxx&index=ISSN&term= (where xxx = your library's 3-letter code)
6. In the field labeled Library Name in Link Text, enter the name of your library building.
7. Once you are done entering this information, test to make sure the link is working. To perform a test for each of the links you just entered, click on the Test button. It should make a connection to an exact item in LINC Pac, using the ISBN/ISSN numbers in the test.
8. Save Changes and exit from the Administrative Module.
If you leave the page without saving changes, you will lose any changes you made.
Some libraries want to make sure that the LINC Pac workstation can only access the online catalog, not the Internet. You can do this easily by configuring settings within the default web browser on each PC.
The easiest browser to install and set up for this limitation is Mozilla, version 1.2.1. The installation program is located at http://www.mozilla.org. You can also set up this limitation in both Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator.
After installing the browser of your choice, setup the browser to limit access to just one domain, the domain that houses LINC Pac. This will allow patrons to search the online catalog but they will not be able to follow any links to the Internet.
-In Mozilla, select Edit>Preferences
1. In the Preferences panel, select Advanced>Proxies
2. Under Configure Proxies to
Access the Internet, select the radio
button next to Manual
Proxy Configuration.
3. In the box labeled HTPP Proxy, enter a message like "This computer is limited to the Library Catalog" or something similar. This is the message that will appear when the patron tries to access the outside Internet.
5. In the box next to HTPP Proxy, labeled Port, enter 80.
6. In the box labeled No Proxy For, enter the donam name of the sites that you DO want to allow patrons to access. Separate each domain name with a comma. The domain name for LINC Pac is ltls.org. You can include other domains if you want. Example: FirstSearch domain is oclc.org, Illinois State Library domain is library.sos.state.il.us.
7. Click OK to save your changes.
-In Internet Explorer (version 5.5 or higher), select Tools>Internet Options
1. In the Connections panel, select the LAN settings box
2. Under the section labelled
Proxy Server, check the Use a
Proxy Server box. Click the button
labelled Advanced
3. Under the section labeled Servers, under Proxy Address to Use, enter a message such as "Online Catalog" and enter 80 under Port.
4. Check the box labeled Use the Same Proxy Server for all protocols at the bottom of the section labeled Servers.
5. In the section labeled Exceptions, enter the domain name of the sites that you DO want all patrons to access. Separate each domain name with a semi-colon. Domains must begin with www... The domain name for LINC Pac is www.ltls.org. You can include other domains if you want.
6. Click OK to save your changes.
-In Netscape Navigator (version 7.0 or higher), select Edit>Preferences
1. In the Preferences panel, select Advanced>Proxies
2. Under Configure Proxies to
Access the Internet, select the radio
button next to Manual
Proxy Configuration.
3. In the box labeled HTPP Proxy, enter a message like "This computer is limited to the Library Catalog" or something similar. This is the message that will appear when the patron tries to access the outside Internet.
5. In the box next to HTPP Proxy, labeled Port, enter 80.
6. In the box labeled No Proxy For, enter the domain name of the sites that you DO want to allow patrons to access. Separate each domain name with a comma. The domain name for LINC Pac is ltls.org. You can include other domains if you want. Example: FirstSearch domain is oclc.org, Illinois State Library domain is library.sos.state.il.us.
7. Click OK to save your changes.

Keep in mind that setting up web access through Mozilla, Netscape, or Internet Explorer does not protect against changes to this setup, particularly if staff or students have unlimited access to the desktop. A product for preventing changes to the desktop or software settings is the responsibility of the library and falls outside the scope of these instructions.
