- The Danville Public Library was established in 1883 as a tax-supported
institution. It occupied rented quarters until a library building was erected
in 1904 with funds from Andrew Carnegie. A small addition was completed
in 1930 and multi-storied stacks were added in 1959 to ease the space needs.
On November 7, 1995, following a successful fund drive for $1.5 million,
a City bond for $2.5 million, and $400,000 from the Illinois State Library,
the new Danville Public Library opened to the public. Located on the same
block as the Carnegie building, the new library offers study rooms, large
and small meeting rooms, and lounge seating, as well as books, audiovisual
materals, magazines, public computers, and assistive reading devices for
vision-impaired people. The library also hosts meetings for a support group
for the visually impaired.
