- The Champaign Library Association, a subscription
public library, was organized in 1868. In 1876, the Champaign Public
Library and Reading Room was established as a free (tax-supported)
public library. The Library's first permanent home (in 1896) was provided
through the generosity of A. C. Burnham. A 40,000-square-foot Main Library
at 505 S. Randolph opened in 1978. The current 122,600-square-foot building,
built just behind the previous library, opened in January 2008.
Service agencies now include two buildings, one bookmobile, home delivery,
and various deposit collections. The Library offers a wide variety of
programs to persons of all ages.
