When a new library becomes a member
of the Lincoln Trail Libraries System, the Cataloging Center catalogs
all of the library's existing collection in order to ensure that every
item the library owns is included in the LINC catalog. This is called retrospective
cataloging.
Items that are newly acquired
by LTLS member libraries and that are not in the LINC catalog are sent
to the Cataloging Center for cataloging.
All items (monographs, serials,
computer files, kits, sound and audio recordings, cartographic
materials, toys, and other multimedia) are cataloged according to
national standards in the MARC (MAchine-Readable Cataloging) bibliographic
format. The resulting bibliographic records are added to the LINC
catalog on a daily basis.
Member libraries are responsible
for adding their own local holdings record information to bibliographic
records and for assigning call numbers to their items.
Maintenance of the LINC catalog
records (e.g., merging records), and the deletion and addition
of holdings on OCLC/WorldCat (an international bibliographic network)
are performed by the Cataloging Center.
The Lincoln Trail Libraries System
Cataloging Center currently provides cataloging services for approximately
100 member libraries.
Bi-annual Cataloging Center Heads
meetings are held in order to communicate cataloging circumstances
and to maintain cataloging standards among the four cataloging centers.
The LTLS Cataloging Center's hours
of operation are 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday,
and 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Friday. Contact Vanessa Whippo, vwhipp@lincolntrail.info, for
further information about the Cataloging Center.
Member libraries that use Lincoln
Trail's Cataloging Center must submit their unique items for cataloging
and input into the LINC catalog according to policies agreed to by the
Automated Libraries Council.
